Apple’s Touching New Mouse

A new computer mouse is generally an afterthought—a new shade of pink, a slightly more ergonomic form—but Apple’s new “Magic Mouse” takes a step further by imitating the touch-screen experience of an iPhone.

Without any physical buttons, the input device—now available for $69—is itself the button, Apple says. Using technology employed on the iPhone and iPod Touch, the top of Magic Mouse is a sensor that reads touch gestures to scroll, pan, swipe and click on documents and in applications. Earlier iterations of Apple mice were rounded criticized for a rather sloppy feel and “loose” fit.

The new device is Bluetooth-enabled for wireless use, and Apple says its equally friendly to either left or right hands. But it will work only with Macs running Leopard version 10.5.8 or later; Windows users need not apply.

Magic Mouse also ships with a new range of desktop iMacs, announced Tuesday, as was an updated, bottom-of-the-line MacBook for $999.

The new iMacs’ LED-backlit displays come in either 21.5 or 27 inches. They start at $1,199 with Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz chips. The 27-inch display is fairly massive even for a giant desktop, and Apple says it displays 2560-by-1440 pixel resolution, which should translate to a stunning image—from about four feet away. Fortunately, it ships with a wireless keyboard should users care to kick back. That Mac sells for $1,699.

The new MacBook inherits the 13.3-inch LED-lit screen from its MacBook Pro siblings as well as a longer-life, seven-hour battery, but keeps a polycarbonate (rather than aluminum) housing and its price tag of $999. It ships with a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM, and a 250-gigabyte hard drive.

Review: Windows 7 strong, but don't pay to upgrade

Next week, Microsoft is releasing Windows 7, a slick, much improved operating system that should go a long way toward erasing the bad impression left by its previous effort, Vista.

If you've been holding off on buying a new computer, Windows 7 will be a good excuse to get back into the game. And if you've been weighing a Mac versus a Windows PC, then you should know that "7" makes Windows more attractive, though not a clear-cut choice for everyone. Windows is now easier to use and better looking than it was before, while maintaining its core advantage of cheaper, more diverse hardware.

However, most PC users should not take the release of Windows 7 as a call to action, or feel that they have to run out and buy the software for use on a computer they're planning on keeping. The upgrade will most likely not be worth the time or money, much less the effort of hosting a Windows 7 "launch party" as Microsoft suggests.

Windows 7 will come in several versions. The one aimed at U.S. consumers is Home Premium, which will cost $120 if bought as an upgrade to XP or Vista. You can buy it as a download or on a disc. Beginning on Oct. 22, it will come installed on new PCs.

Here are some of its highlights:

— The taskbar — the strip of icons usually found at the bottom of the screen — now does more than show which programs are running. You can also stick icons for your favorite programs on it, to launch them quickly. It's fast and convenient, combining the best features of the old Windows taskbar and Apple's Dock.

— File folders can now be organized into "libraries." You can have a photo library, for instance, that gives you quick access to pictures in folders spread out over your hard drive, or even several hard drives. This is great because many applications don't automatically put files into Microsoft's My Documents and My Photos folders, and tend to deposit content in their own folders. The new arrangement also makes for easy backups.

— Like Vista, Windows 7 will ask you twice if you really want to make changes to your settings or install programs, for the sake of security. But Windows 7 does it less often, and the prompts can be turned off.

— Windows 7 can sense if you use more than one finger on your touch pad or touch screen, allowing for neat tricks such as spreading your fingers to zoom into a picture, just like on the iPhone. This is isn't revolutionary per se — computer manufacturers have bolted multitouch sensing on previous versions of Windows. But it does make it easier for them to include advanced touch capabilities, and many of them are planning to do so. That is what could really revolutionize how we use computers. I've tried laptops and desktops with touch screens, and found it nice to be able to directly tap links and buttons, bypassing the touch pad and mouse.

— For a lot of users, the step up to Windows 7 will also mark a transition to a 64-bit operating system. That means computers will now be able to use a lot more Random Access Memory, or RAM, for better performance in demanding applications such as video editing. Vista and XP came in 64-bit versions in addition to the regular 32-bit versions, but the XP version was never popular, and the Vista version became mainstream only last year. But 64 bits will be standard on Windows 7, installed on nearly all new computers.

Windows XP users have a lot more to gain by going to Windows 7. Vista introduced some great features, such as fast searches of the entire hard drive, that of course are present in 7 as well. Unfortunately, upgrading an existing PC from XP to 7 is not easy.

After upgrading, users will have to reinstall all their programs and find their files in the folder where Windows 7 tucks them away.

They may also have hardware problems. I found an old HP laser printer no longer worked with Windows 7. This isn't really Microsoft's fault or, specifically, a problem with the new operating system — HP just doesn't provide a 64-bit driver for that printer. A driver is a program that tells a piece of hardware how to work with an operating system.

If you do upgrade, I would still recommend tackling that transition head-on by installing the 64-bit version of Windows 7, which doesn't cost more. Microsoft recommends a minimum of 2 gigabytes of RAM to run it.

If your computer runs Windows Vista, I think it's hard to justify spending $120 for an upgrade. The new features are nice but hardly must-haves. For daily e-mail and Web surfing, they won't make much of a difference. Vista was much maligned when it arrived in early 2007 for being slow, buggy and annoying. Now, it really isn't that bad, because updates have fixed a lot of the problems.

However, if you bought a Vista-based computer after June 25, you should be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 from the manufacturer, and I suggest taking advantage of it. Your computer likely already is running 64-bit software, so there should be no problems with drivers, and the upgrade is much easier than one from XP. Windows 7 can keep your installed programs and your files in their old folders.

In weeks of testing the final version of Windows 7 on five computers, I encountered only one serious glitch. The backup function simply didn't work on one computer. The error message was obscure as always, and troubleshooting on Microsoft's Web site provided no solution. I ended up using third-party backup software. Given that regular backups are essential for a home computer, one can only hope that this will be an unusual problem that gets fixed promptly.

Another disappointment is that Windows 7 doesn't seem to improve boot-up times. In my tests, it took slightly longer to get going on Windows 7 than with XP or Vista on the same computer. I don't think this should be a major issue, though — instead of shutting your computer down, use "sleep mode" instead. This function has improved a lot since XP, and most computers take about 10 seconds to wake up.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about Windows 7 is that it's inspiring computer manufacturers to try new things, and reviving old ideas like touch-enabled "tablet" PCs. It's breathing new life into the computer market. It just won't do much for old clunkers.

Microsoft to release free antivirus PC software

REDMOND, Wash. - Microsoft Corp. says its new computer security program can be downloaded starting on Tuesday.

Microsoft Security Essentials, as the free antivirus software is called, has been available in a beta test version since June.

The software updates daily to stay current with the latest malicious programs, which can steal passwords or turn PCs into spam servers. Microsoft says it won't make computers run slower.

Microsoft has said it isn't out to steal business from companies like McAfee Inc. and Symantec Corp., which make popular antivirus programs with more features. Microsoft says it hopes the free program will appeal to people who don't already run antivirus software.

Troubled rapper DMX the latest celeb trying to cash in on MMA

The rapper DMX is scheduled for a fight against Eric Martinez on the same card where Butterbean will take on Tank Abbott.

Go ahead, read that sentence again, and let it soak in.

Thunder Promotions, who is putting on this card in Birmingham, Ala. on Dec. 12, must not have been satisfied that the Butterbean/Tank Abbott bout was enough of a freak show fight. Eric "Butterbean" Esch, at 5'11", 350 lbs., will likely outweigh the veteran Abbott by nearly 100 lbs.

But nothing screams freak show fights like a celebrity bout. DMX, the rapper who once was a part of Ruff Ryders, has become better known for his run-ins with the law than his musical talents. Cocaine and marijuana possession, theft, animal cruelty, criminal weapon possession, DUI, parole violations and giving a false name and social security number at a hospital are all part of his past.

In a recent interview, DMX said that he is working on two albums now because "the streets need him." He didn't mention any training for MMA, but hey, who needs to train for a fight? The good news for DMX is that MMA is not regulated in Alabama, which is why freak show fights like this can happen. Drug testing is usually under the control of the state regulatory commissions, so DMX will most likely not have to take a drug test.

Reality TV star Spencer Pratt and baseball player Jose Canseco have also dipped their toes in the MMA pool. With Canseco, his fight ended in 77 seconds. Let's see if DMX can last that long.

Sharapova reaches quarters at Pan Pacific Open

TOKYO (AP)—Maria Sharapova recovered from a slow start Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over compatriot Alisa Kleybanova.

The former top-ranked Russian, who has been struggling since returning from a 10-month injury layoff, will face Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Benesova defeated Taiwan’s Chang Kai-chan 7-5, 6-2.

Sharapova, 25th in the world rankings, took control of the match in the second set when she broke Kleybanova three times to open up a 5-0 lead. Kleybanova broke back in the sixth game and held before Sharapova served to win the set.

“She started off really strong,” Sharapova said. “I was too slow in the beginning. Nobody had much of a warmup today, we kind of had to warm up in the first few games and she did a much better job of that than me.”

Sharapova, who broke the unseeded Kleybanova three more times in the final set before closing out the match, won her first tournament as a professional at the Japan Open in 2003 and won in Tokyo in 2005. With the top six seeds all out of the tournament, she is positioned well for another shot at a title in the $2 million event at Ariake Colosseum.

“Some of the other girls not in the top 10 have played really well here,” Sharapova said. “You’ve got to expect that from every player you play and focus on the task at hand.”

Jelena Jankovic of Serbia advanced when Russia’s Elena Vesnina was forced to retire with a left thigh injury. Jankovic, the No. 7 seed, was leading 6-1, 3-0 when the third-round match was stopped.

Jankovic is the highest seeded player left in the tournament but said she won’t allow that to add to the pressure of winning here for the first time.

“I don’t really think about that,” Jankovic said. “I just think about my game and what I have to do on the court. I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself.”

The former world No. 1 will meet France’s Marion Bartoli in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Fourteenth-seeded Bartoli recovered from a set down to defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Jankovic has lost to Bartoli twice this year, at the Australian Open and at Stanford.

Magdalena Rybarikova defeated Aleksandra Wozniak 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

New Dell laptop introduces wireless charging

Yesterday I had the chance to check out a new laptop from Dell. With its crisp screen, ultra-thin profile, and cutting edge specs like an SSD hard drive, it's certainly a looker, yet there's nothing immediately obvious about the machine -- part of Dell's business-class Latitude line -- that makes it unique. But there's a rare first secreted within the Latitude Z: Its battery can be charged wirelessly, without plugging it in.

The system works a lot like your electric toothbrush. A special dock (available as a $200 option) has a coil of wire inside that matches up with a coil on the bottom of the Latitude Z. When the two coils come in contact, power is transferred over that small distance through induction. Dell says it is no slower to charge this way than through plug-in power (a standard plug is also available when you're on the road and away from the dock). Getting the laptop situated just-so on the dock so that the two coils are in contact didn't seem as easy as it should be, but overall I found the innovation to be decisively cool.

The Latitude Z has other enhancements in its innards, though none as exciting as the wireless charging feature. Dell has long included smart card slots in its corporate-class machine, but an option with the Z lets users simply swipe the card across the palm rest to log in. Dell also uses a separate processor on its own motherboard to give the Z a non-Windows, instant-on mode to give quick access to a web browser, email, contacts, and calendars. Dell says use of the low-power quick-boot mode could provide battery life of half a day or more.

Then there's a wireless docking system -- separate from the wireless charging option -- that lets you connect to USB devices and an external monitor without plugging the computer in. An implementation of long-suffering UWB technology, Dell demonstrated the computer using a secondary monitor connected to the dock, the screen smoothly updating as a company rep walked around the room with the laptop in hand, unconnected to the monitor by wire. It's probably less useful than some of the machine's other innovations (the range of the wireless dock is only 12 feet), but still very cool.

The Latitude Z starts at $1,999 (on sale for $1.799 at the moment) and goes on sale today. Expensive to be sure, and possibly only in reach of the most "C" of C-level executives.

11:15 PM: Arreola’s ring walk is underway. Arreola looks to be in a mean mood, we’ll see how that stands up for him. Klitschko is now making his ring walk, the crowd boos and is clearly in Arreola’s corner. Klitschko looks determined and focused, but also stoic and calm compared to Arreola’s energy and attitude. 11:12 PM: We’re into a Klitschko background story now. The fights should be underway in just a moment.

11:07 PM: The Arreola background story is going into his weight problems quite a bit. Arreola seems to think it’s not a problem at all, and that if he works hard he should play hard. He has had a new strength and conditioning coach for this fight, however his 251 lb weight says he hasn’t taken the new fitness approach too seriously.

11:03 PM: The replay for the Mayweather Marquez fight is over and Klitschko Arreola is just a few moments away. HBO is now going into a background story of Arreola.

5:25 PM: Tonight is the big night for Klitschko vs. Arreola. The HBO telecast for the Klitschko Arreola bout will begin airing at 10 pm. Rd 1: Klitschko starts with a lot of lead left hooks and reaching uppercuts. He doesn’t look like he is very warmed up. Arreola tries to make his way inside behind a couple of jabs, but Klitschko so far is keeping him at bay. Vitali continues to bounce around on his toes, lands a stiff jab and continues alternating between pawing jabs, hard jabs and lead left hooks. Vitali keeps his hands almost all the way down, and by the end of the round Arreola already seems to be a bit discouraged perhaps.

Rd 2: Vitali lands a big right hand for the first time, but Arreola then does his first good work of the night immediately following. Vitali on his toes and keeping Arreola at the end of his jab. Vitali timing his jabs well so that Arreola can never get comfortable and always has to reset. Another easy Klitschko round.

Rd 3: Klitschko lands a big overhand right after pawing with a few jabs, and continues to throw his reaching right uppercut to the body. As Klitschko pushes Arreola to the side with a brushing right hand to the head, Arreola smiles, but his efforts to get inside are already less energetic. Klitschko takes the round easy and Arreola’s face is starting to show some sign of wear and tear.

Rd 4: Arreola lands a reaching right to Klitschko’s head, his first good shot of the night. Klitschko seems to have been caught off balance as he stumbled back, and reacts by throwing a few combos. The crowd and Arreola are both energized, and Arreola is having his best round of the night thus far.Vitali seems to stabilize himself behind his jab. The round could go either way, but despite Arreola’s big landed shot I think Klitschko controlled more of the action.

Rd 5: As Klitschko gets on his bike a bit the crowd boos, Klitschko responds by throwing a few hard shots. Arreola gets inside and they tie up, he then lands a few good, hard body shots. Klitschko slows down the pace by circling and working from his jab.

Rd 6: The pace has slowed in this round as Vitali seems calm and in control. He gets some good pressure a few times, but Klitschko more often than notes circles out of danger and dictates the action with his jab. Arreola’s pressure is seeming more desperate than planned or controlled at this point.

Rd 7: Arreola pushes forward and actually lands a few jabs. Klitschko does seem more tired but at the end of the round, he controlle the pace, the action and he landed more shots. Arreola threw a punch that hits Klitschko in the back that he should have been at least warned for, however the ref ignored or missed it.

Rd 8: Just as the crowd and Arreola seem to be out of the fight, he comes to life by landing a jarring left hand, and he immediately begins pressing as Klitschko goes on the retreat. Arreola lands another big left as Klitschko tried one of his reaching right uppercuts to the body. Arreola grabs his first round of the night – an anomaly or a sign of trouble to come for Vitali?

Rd 9: In the first minute of the 9th, the answer to the above question seems to be more anomaly than anything else. Arreola despite looking more energetic, also is appearing more bloody and busted up. Vitali’s jab is back, as is his lead left hook and he’s setting his feet and pushing forward instead of retreating. He lands a big right that makes Arreola pause, and if he lands a few more of those Arreola could crumble. But in the meantime Vitali is content keeping the fight at its current pace. Big Vitali round.

Rd 10: More of the same in round 10. Arreola is trying, but it’s more a show of heart than a show of effective pressure. As Arreola’s face is covered with streams of blood, Klitschko looks nearly untouched.

The fight has been stopped! Arreola is unhappy with the decision, but he was taking more than enough punishment and after a brief burst of energy in the 8th, Vitali responded by continuing is streak of dominance. Arreola begins crying as he came up short on his dream.

Post fight: Arreola continues weeping in his interview with Larry Merchant, calling Vitali a f*cking strong dude, among other things… he’s swollen up and battered a bit, and disappointed in his performance and the outcome. He certainly shouldn’t be apologizing for the performance and if anything his raw emotion, and gritty attitude will gain him more of a standing in the sport.

Side note: Why HBO was continuing to pump up Arreola during the fight as coming on strong, and making a dent is beyond me, and somewhat deplorable. Hey guys… we are already watching, you don’t have to sell us on the fight while it’s happening.

Google Chrome Injects Itself Into Internet Explorer With Chrome Frame

Google just announced the launch of Chrome Frame, a new open-source project that will allow Chrome's rendering engine to run within Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6,7, and 8. This plugin, which is available now, will give developers the option to ask users if they would prefer to switch to the Chrome rendering and JavaScript engine. Users simply continue to use Internet Explorer and the switch will be completely seamless, with no noticeable changes to the user interface.

Chrome Now Runs Inside Internet Explorer

As Google's Mike Smith and Alex Russell told us when we talked to them about this project, a lot of companies have good reasons why they can't just simply switch away from Internet Explorer. After all, these enterprises often have made large investments in an infrastructure that is only compatible with IE. As Google pointed out to us, though, this shouldn't hold back developers who want to explore the possibilities that newer, faster and more modern browsers like Chrome can offer.

Google, which has lately developed a tendency to route around other vendors, developed this plugin without help from Microsoft, but Smith and Russell noted that Microsoft gives developers a lot of ways to easily extend Internet Explorer.

Focus on Developers

Thanks to this plugin, developers will now be able to give these users an option to at least switch to a faster rendering engine by just adding one single line of code to their sites ().

Indeed, this current release is mostly meant to give developers a choice for how they want to deliver their web apps to their users. At least for now, users won't be able to make the switch to the Chrome engine persistent, though they can invoke the plugin by putting 'cf:' in front of any URL.

Google is obviously interested in getting its web apps into businesses. These web apps tend to work best in a modern browser with a fast JavaScript engine and that is not something Internet Explorer is known for. As Mike Smith told us, the Web shouldn't be hobbled by this.

As for the user experience, the Google team tells us that the switch will be absolutely seamless and that the plugin will offer the same speed and reliability of Chrome inside IE.

A Trojan Horse?

Google hopes that this plugin will enable developers in enterprises to write code for a modern browser that isn't held back by some of the old paradigms. That, of course, is a noble undertaking. At the same time, though, we can't help but wonder if Google also plans to use this plugin to plant a Trojan horse inside these companies. After all, very few businesses are ready to make the switch from IE to Chrome right now, but Chrome Frame now offers companies the option to get the best of both worlds and - maybe - switch over to Chrome completely in the long run.

As for Google itself, the company plans to use Chrome Frame to make Google Wave run smoothly in Internet Explorer but hasn't announced any other plans to use Chrome Frame in other products yet.

E-mail: Caps Lock crimes and misdemeanors

Nearly 10 years after doing my first story on e-mail etiquette in the workplace, I thought I’d seen it all until I noticed this item in a New Zealand newspaper: “Emails spark woman’s sacking.”

I expected to read another example of inappropriate virtual behavior – a racy forwarded e-mail or some such specimen. But the story was about a New Zealand accountant who successfully sued her former employer for wrongful termination. Why was she fired? Because her notes to colleagues WERE ALWAYS WRITTEN IN CAPS: the e-mail equivalent of shouting. The company claimed it created “disharmony in the workplace.”

It seems we still have some distance to cross regarding e-mail and its impact on the workplace. New research from the University of Queensland in Australia shows that ambiguous e-mails are a major source of workplace stress – even more than volume of e-mail. They leave colleagues and direct reports to wonder: What did she or he mean by that?

Through years of reporting on the topic (and my own bitter experience) here are my golden rules when e-mailing.

Avoid premature e-mailation

Add the address of the e-mail last. Often it is the first, as a reply or “all reply.” This can be deadly because the “save” and “send” buttons are often dangerously close to one another. By putting the e-mail address last, it creates an automatic pause to rethink sending the note, or make sure you are sending the note to the intended parties. It also helps eliminate slips such as dishing dirt by e-mail on a colleague or boss and then accidentally sending it to that person.

Never drink and email

Back in the day, I used to be a party-hardy character, and paid for it with hangovers and e-mail regret (how I wished someone would develop a USB breathalyzer that locks the computer if inebriated).

I eliminated this problem by eliminating alcohol from my diet (which solved many other problems as well). But if abstinence isn’t for you, then at least abstain from drunken e-mails: No machinery, not even computers, should be operated while impaired.

Keep it short

One study by Vanderbilt University shows you can tell the company level of an employee by their e-mail: Top executives are short and to the point (a result of the volume and speed — it says “I’m busy” ). Middle management is wordy (a result of trying to influence higher ups) and lower-rung e-mails are chatty (more a social function of the work place).

Here, the top execs got it right. Email is a very inefficient tool to sway opinion. Straight forward is the way forward.

Reader responsibility

One study I read forever altered how I view and use e-mail. It showed that the tone – funny, sarcastic, serious – of e-mails is misinterpreted half of the time. That means unless the sender has the talent of Ernest Hemingway to convey emotion with an economy of words, it’s a coin-toss whether the feelings the note produces in the reader are legitimate.

Anytime I get an e-mail that causes an emotional response in me, I stop and remember this study. And rather than react, I simply write “Thanks!” Or I pick up the phone. Or I press ‘delete’ and go about my day.

Today (Monday) 14 September 2009, I received email from Google Mail Team (this is the email address: accessaccount10@gmail.com) saying that my gmail account will be deleted within 24 hours if I don't verify my account by filling out my account information. This email from google makes me felt nervous and embarrassed since the gmail account they're going to delete is my gmail account I'm using in this blog.

I'm thinking that I'm going to shift my blog account to another gmail account to avoid the deletion of this blog. If this email message is for real my gmail account will be close cause I'm not going to follow there instruction. I'm not sure if this is scam or for real but I will never give my account details and my password.

(CNN) -- Electronics such as phones and laptops may start shedding their power cords within a year.

That's the prediction of Eric Giler, CEO of WiTricity, a company that's able to power light bulbs using wireless electricity that travels several feet from a power socket.

WiTricity's version of wireless electricity -- which converts power into a magnetic field and sends it sailing through the air at a particular frequency -- still needs to be refined a bit, he said, but should be commercially available soon.

Giler, whose company is a spinoff of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology research group, says wireless electricity has the potential to cut the need for power cords and throw-away batteries.

"Five years from now, this will seem completely normal," he said.

"The biggest effect of wireless power is attacking that huge energy wasting that goes on where people buy disposable batteries," he said. Watch Giler demonstrate the idea

It also will make electric cars more attractive to consumers, he said, because they will be able to power up their vehicles simply by driving into a garage that's fitted with a wireless power mat.

Electric cars are "absolutely gorgeous," he added, "but does anyone really want to plug them in?"

Ideas about wireless electricity have been floating around the world of technology for more than a century. Nikola Tesla started toying with the ability to send electricity through the air in the 1890s. Since then, though, making wireless electricity technology safe and cheap enough to put on the market has been an arduous task for researchers.

Engineers have developed several ways to convert electricity into something that's safe to send through the air without a wire. Some of their technologies are available on commercial scales, but they have some limits.

Low-level power

One set of researchers is able to send power over long distances but in very small amounts.

For example, in 2003, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, company called Powercast used radio waves to light a low-power LED bulb that was 1.5 miles from its power source, said Harry Ostaffe, spokesman for the company.

Now, Powercast's technology is used in office buildings to power temperature sensors that regulate air conditioning systems and in other low-power applications. The company also has sold wireless artificial Christmas trees strung with LED lights for about $400, Ostaffe said.

But radio waves can't transfer the larger amounts of electricity needed to power laptops or mobile phones, he said.

Power pads

Another type of wireless electricity technology can send large amounts of power over very small distances, often not more than a few centimeters.

Such technology is available today, but only in minimal ways. Think, for instance, about electric toothbrushes that sit on charging cradles but don't actually plug in.

One problem with the high-power, small-distance idea is that each device requires its own charging pad, and consumers hate that, said Menno Treffers, chairman of the steering group at the Wireless Power Consortium. The group formed in late 2008 to promote standardization of the technology.

Treffers said consumers soon should be able to buy one power pad that would charge all of their electronic devices. It might look like a placemat, and cell phones, remote controls and appliances would charge automatically when they're placed on the pad.

"The key reason to do it is convenience, because if you want to get rid of all the different power supplies, there are other ways that are cheaper," he said.

The pads, which would rely on electrical sockets as their initial sources of power, also would be more energy efficient than plugging all of the devices into power sockets directly, he said. The pads would shut off automatically when a device has finished charging and are about 70 percent to 90 percent as efficient as transferring power through a wire, he said.

Wire-free chargers for a single item are relatively cheap: about $10 to build, he said. But it's unclear how much pads that could power a living room worth of equipment would cost, he said.

'Magnetically coupled resonance'

Ultimately, Giler's group from MIT wants to combine the best of both worlds: large amounts of power sent over long distances.

Their technology is called "magnetically coupled resonance," and it basically sends a magnetic field through the air at a specific frequency that an an enabled phone or TV can pick up and turn back into electricity. It works kind of like sound. Think about how an opera singer can break a wine glass if he sings at just the right frequency.

Adding the technology to cell phones, mp3 players and other devices should not increase their cost much, he said.

Despite Giler's optimism, there are some doubts about magnetically coupled resonance.

Treffers said there may be health risks associated with the magnetic fields created in the MIT process. Giler said the technology would produce magnetic fields that are "about the same density as the earth's magnetic field."

He said wireless electricity has many environmental benefits. Companies make about 40 billion disposable batteries each year, he said, and wireless electricity could do away with that.

The biggest barrier to the technology's adoption, he said, is that people just aren't familiar with the idea.

Is there something in common with multinational company like Apple and Blackberry? I’m thinking how they got their names. Why Apple and Blackberry got their names from a fruit? Is it lucky to take your product name from a fruit to become the most successful technology company on the planet? Or it was just the quality of their product?

Marquez will beat Mayweather

Oscar De La Hoya says in his weekly blog that Juan Manuel Marquez will shock a lot of people when he fights Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Sept. 19 in Las Vegas on pay-per-view television. Here’s why:

Everything is in Juan Manuel Marquez’s favor now. Floyd Mayweather has a lot of distractions, he’s been away from the sport for two years and he has a rib injury. I strongly feel everything is falling into place. This is the right time for Marquez to beat him.

And even if Mayweather didn’t have these problems, I feel Marquez’s style is well-suited for Mayweather. Mayweather is going to want to prove not only to himself but to all the fans that he can put on a good show, which means he is going to have to stand in front of Marquez. That will work in Marquez’s favor.

Marquez is not a slow fighter at all; he’s faster than people think. He showed that twice against Manny Pacquiao, who is very fast. And Mayweather doesn’t throw punches in bunches like Pacquiao. He throws one, two punches and that’s it. That will allow Marquez time to think and find openings. It won’t be like Pacquiao, who throws punches from everywhere the whole fight.

Another question is Mayweather’s age. Once you hit 30, things start to change. It will be very interesting to see how that affects Mayweather, especially because he’s been away for two years. Marquez (36) has already experienced that and has been able to adapt to changes in his body and mind after 30.

I also feel Marquez won’t respect Mayweather’s power at all because he’s been in there with hard punchers. I’ll tell you one thing: Mayweather does not hit hard. The only thing Marquez has to worry about is Mayweather dancing around all night long, sticking that jab in his face. That’s it.

Again, I don’t think Mayweather will do that, though. I just don’t think he’ll want to run from a smaller guy. If Mayweather thinks he’s the best fighter pound for pound –- and he does -– he’ll have to stand toe to toe with the smaller guy. He’ll be pressured to do that because that’s what the crowd at the MGM Grand will want.

Mayweather has this big ego. I’m sure he’s thinking, “I can take care of a guy as small as Marquez with no problem.”

I think the delay of the fight [from July 18 to Sept. 19 because of Mayweather’s rib injury] is a blessing in disguise. It gave Marquez more time to get stronger, to bulk up and get his speed back. You start out using heavy gloves and then use smaller and lighter gloves to get faster as your body adapts to it.

Marquez has a tremendous jab and will to win. If Marquez does for 12 rounds what I did [against Mayweather] for seven rounds, he can win the fight easily. It doesn’t take all the power in the world; it just takes planning your shots right. It takes smarts. And that’s what Marquez has. He’s one of the smartest fighters on the planet.

As long as you use your jab against Mayweather he’s lost. He doesn’t know how to block a jab. And if you feint him, it stops him in his tracks. You don’t want to allow Mayweather time to think; that’s when he can be dangerous. You have to jab, to feint. That’s the key.

Mayweather’s layoff also will be a factor. Two years is a very long time to be away from boxing. I’m sure he went to the gym here and there but actually being in a competitive fight up in the ring, with eight-ounce gloves, is a whole different thing. I’m sure he’ll have some rust the night of the fight.

I can see the first round being a feeling-out round. Mayweather will realize right away that his weight advantage is not a big deal at all the way he thought it would be. I feel things will start to heat up in the second round, when Mayweather will start hearing boos from all those fans who come in for Mexican Independence weekend, all the rowdy Marquez fans.

Then Mayweather will want to prove that he can stand in front of a smaller guy with no problem. That’s when things will start to unfold in Marquez’s favor. Mayweather is not invincible. I truly feel Marquez will expose him.

Outed blogger who trashed model is angry at Google

NEW YORK (AP)— A blogger who called a magazine cover model offensive names on a Web site says Google failed to protect her right to privacy.

Rosemary Port tells the Daily News in Sunday editions that she's angry that Google unmasked her after a Manhattan judge forced the company to reveal her identity.

Port was identified as the author of a site on Google's Blogger.com that had published anonymous remarks about Vogue cover model Liskula Cohen's hygiene and sexual habits.

Cohen sued to have the blogger identified, arguing that the comments on the site were defamatory.

But Port says that her privacy was violated, and that she has a right to her opinions.

Google did not immediately respond to an e-mail sent Sunday requesting comment.

Microsoft apologized for the incident on the mistake of changing the black man’s head to white man’s head. Originally, a picture of three employees sitting around an office desk with the different ethnic , an asian, a black man and a white woman appeared on firm’s US website but on the Polish site, the black man’s head was altered into a white man’s head.

Is this a part of marketing strategy? Is this a mistake? Or it is a racism?

What will internet publishers expecting from google adsense in the future?

There are times while I’m writing my articles I think of these questions, Is there a future with google adsense? Will google adsense still the online money making machine in the future?

Many of today’s blogger‘s, webmaster’s and internet publisher’s were writing their success on google adsense, showing their adsense earning on the net. If all were doing the same, google adsense and other online advertisement is highly at risk. I don’t think that internet publisher using google adsense or any other online advertisement can still make money in the future if all internet users knows that the ads they click gives profit to the webmaster. Internet users will no longer clicks on the ads appearing on the net.

Before, as I’m innocent with google adsense, each time I visit’s a website I click on the ads relevant to what I’m searching for unknowingly I’m pouring a gold to the pocket of the webmaster. I heard adsense from a close friend almost a year ago. It came to my knowledge that each time someone’s click on the ads it will gives profit to the publisher. After that, I stopped clicking on the ads. That will happen to other internet user’s if they’ll find out that the ads they are clicking for is giving a huge amount to the website publisher. Lucky to those website publishers who knows google adsense long time ago. How many of the internet user population knows google adsense? Every day, how many internet users reads article about google adsense? Will internet users still click on the ads in the future? Just a few questions that future could answer.

Billboard announced that Beyoncé will be accepting its Woman Of The Year Award at the 2009 Billboard Women In Music Event, taking place on Oct. 2 in New York City.

The honor, given to a female recording artist that has inspired the music business with her success, leadership and new ideas, will be awarded to the singer for her accomplishments over the past 12 months.

In the last year, Beyoncé kicked off her world tour "I Am..." in support of her third solo album "I Am...Sasha Fierce," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in November and features the hit singles "If I Were A Boy," "Single Ladies," "Halo," "Ego" and "Sweet Dreams."

The tour also showcased Beyoncé's philanthropic side as she gave 2,500 tickets to families affected by the auto industry crisis in Detroit and joined forces with General Mills Hamburger Helper and Feeding America to deliver 3.5 million meals to local food banks.

UK proposes cutting Web access to file sharers

LONDON (Reuters) - Repeat offenders who persist in illegally downloading music from file-sharing sites such as Limewire could be blocked from accessing the Web under British government proposals issued on Tuesday.

The government said it was publishing new ideas to speed up the process of tackling unlawful peer-to-peer file sharing to prevent damage to the content industries.

Proposals include requiring Internet Service Providers to take action against individual repeat infringers, including blocking access to download sites, reducing broadband speeds or by temporarily suspending an individual's Internet account.

Earlier government proposals had said media regulator Ofcom would need to ascertain that technical measures were needed, meaning the earliest measures to counter the problem would not come into play until 2012.

"The government has now reached the view that, if action was deemed necessary, this might be too long to wait given the pressure put on the creative industries by piracy," it said in a statement. "The new ideas outlined today would potentially allow action to be taken earlier."

Under the new proposals, the Secretary of State would direct Ofcom to introduce technical measures to clamp down on piracy if necessary.

"Technology and consumer behavior is fast-changing and it's important that Ofcom has the flexibility to respond quickly to deal with unlawful file-sharing," Minister for Digital Britain Stephen Timms said in a statement.

Governments around the world have been trying to find a solution to the problem of Internet piracy, with varying levels of success.

A law backed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to cut Internet access to those found guilty of downloading music illegally has already been watered down by France's top constitutional court and a vote has been delayed until September.

Jessica Biel named 'most dangerous celebrity'

NEW YORK - Jessica Biel is the most dangerous celebrity on the Web.

Security technology company McAfee Inc. on Tuesday reported that searches for the 27-year-old actress are more likely to lead to online threats such as spyware and viruses than searches for any other celebrity.

McAfee said fans searching for the actress have a one-in-five chance of ending up at a Web site designed to damage one's computer. Its the third annual report on the subject from McAfee, which last year found that Brad Pitt was the "most dangerous" celeb online.

"Cybercriminals are star watchers, too," said Jeff Green, senior vice president of McAfee's product development. "They latch onto popular celebrities to encourage the download of malicious software in disguise."

Following Biel in the report, in order, were Beyonce, Jennifer Aniston, Tom Brady and Jessica Simpson. McAfee noted President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are curiously safe searches, ranking no. 34 and no. 39, respectively.

For the Sept. 15 episode, he'll take a race on Phelps at a Baltimore-area pool. The emcee explained that O'Neal will swim 50 meters and Phelps will race a "longer distance, to be revealed" — something O'Neal apparently did when he made reference to having to swim one length of the pool before Phelps can finish two lengths.

The private burial ceremony will take place at 7pm at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Glendale.

Michael Jackson burial will be only for friends and family but there’s a place for media.

The pop singer's remains will be placed in a tomb in the Holly Terrace section of the museum.

I’m making my comeback. I’m going to fight Shaquille O’Neal. Apparently he called me out.

It’s a real fight, nothing sanctioned or anything, but a real fight. I’m literally training and getting ready for him. I know one of his big fists can knock me down –- or knock me out -- at any moment. I have to be ready.

Actually, it’s his new reality series, “Shaq Vs.,” on ABC. He’s going up against elite athletes in various sports. With me, he’ll be fighting. I believe he’ll be riding a bicycle against Lance Armstrong. (Chuckles.) I’ll be flying to L.A. to set it up, to go over the format. We’re supposed to do it sometime in September.

I’m actually in training, though, jogging a few miles, getting into shape. And, yes, I’m going to throw punches as hard as I can. That’s for sure. Man, this guy’s a monster. This is a real fight, although we’re doing it with head gear.

I’m sure they’ll want to protect him as much as possible, have him wear a body suit … or a suit of armor. But, hey, I’ll do it with no head gear. I don’t care. Just give me a mouth piece and four-ounce gloves and I’m ready to go. The competitive juices are flowing again.

He’s big, though. I think I’ll have to jump in order to hit him in the stomach. I’m not afraid of this guy, though. No way.

And, hey, if I don’t win, at least I can say, “Pick on somebody your own size.”

I’m actually looking forward to it. I’ve known Shaq for many years. It’s all in good fun … I hope.

Whether you are in a business meeting, sitting in a restaurant or a gathering with friends, you will notice men and women carrying either iPhone or Blackberry smartphones.

Wherever you go, people are holding their phones smiling while reading their messages if they have a Blackberry or sliding their finger on the screen and listening to music on their iPhone. Both Saudi Telecom Company and Mobily provide the Blackberry service which allows the user to stay connected through Blackberry Messenger with anyone anywhere in the world who has the same service. Although Mobily introduced the service before STC did, the popularity of Blackberry phones grew with having another provider in the market.

At the same time, Mobily also introduced iPhone services to the public, thus actually allowing people to utilize the phone, unlike when there was no official provider in the Kingdom. Both services have become revolutionary in the country, increasing sales as well as providing better services, especially when it comes to the third generation service (3G).

iPhone has recently introduced its latest 3GS iPhone, which Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc, described as “a revolutionary mobile phone,” because it combines the iPod, cell phone and Internet features. For consumers, the choice comes down to whether they prefer Blackberry’s keyboard or iPhone’s touchscreen. While iPhone has grabbed the headlines for its sleek design, Blackberry has held its own too.

According to Khalid Khalaf, a customer service employee at Axiom Telecom, the official Blackberry and iPhone providers, girls tend to buy the Blackberry phones more than men. “Our sales of Blackberry Curve or Bold and iPhone are high. However, the new 3GS iPhone is expensive, it ranges between SR4,500 to SR5,000 depending on the phones memory capacity,” he added.

Khalaf also told Arab News the iPhone is known for its Internet browsing features, which he believes is better than Blackberry’s. Arab News visited one of Axiom Telecom stores and asked about the availability of both phones. The Blackberry was available while the iPhone was sold out.

Mona Saeed, 30, works in a private company and received an iPhone as a gift from her husband. She said that she would never consider a Blackberry because it was addictive unlike the iPhone.

“iPhone Internet browsing allows you to surf all sites just like a computer. However, the Blackberry messenger has become an addiction for many,” she added. She described Blackberry users as a kind of “cult” because of their excessive chatting habits on the exclusive Blackberry messenger service known as BBM. In fact, Blackberry has a growing number of addicts, who are nicknamed ‘crackberries’.

Reem Mohammed, who works in a private company and uses both iPhone and Blackberry, said that she prefers iPhone to Blackberry for its user-friendly features and browsing. “I bought the Blackberry first and I like using the messenger to chat with friends and send files. But the iPhone is easier to use,” she said.

Reem also said that iPhone could be used for both work and entertainment while Blackberry is only for the messenger.

“The iPhone browsing is much faster than Blackberry and I can also use Word documents and send e-mails much easier than Blackberry,” she added. However, there are those who would never consider exchanging their Blackberry devices for any other mobile phone.

Ahmed Al-Ali, 25, bought a Blackberry after he heard his friends talking about it. He receives e-mails from three accounts including gmail and hotmail.

“I don’t use the Blackberry messenger a lot. But I love the idea for work purposes of being connected to my e-mails all the time,” he said.

“This device is revolutionary. Everywhere I go, I see people with the colorful phone covers holding one of the devices in their hands,” he said adding that he sees iPhone as an iPod rather than a mobile phone.

At the same time, people are not only using the two devices but debating on which is better. So take a stand: Do you favor Blackberry or iPhone?
